Fortnite season 7 has just arrived! An alien theme battle pass, new crafting recipes, UFO’s? This season is sure to bring players joy with collaborations with the UEFA and popular TV show, Rick and Morty, but now it's time to talk big; a three million dollar prize pool has been announced for the funding of our fortnite world championship series (FNCS) getting split to every region as well as our all star tournament just around the corner. Is this new season prepared to bring us the entertaining brawl we want from last year? Or will it be just your average joe schmoe tournament? Let's look at the facts.
In terms of loot pool removed from last season, not much of it is relevant except for two key items. The infantry rifle is a largely skill-based weapon. It can deal a massive 88 headshot damage with massive potential but missing shots can punish you with its slow rate of fire, giving away your position. Perhaps the largest surprise to everyone is the harpoon gun being removed. This is an insanely crucial clue that epic games are most likely trying to discourage overfishing. Teams that can tank the storm with a couple of well timed floppers will have to stop relying on this as they now have to spend the effort to go through this process, delaying rotations and giving opponents more time to catch opponents vulnerable. This of course is one way to fix a lot of the games going into a heal off and encouraging a more aggressive endgame which is what we like to see in these packed tournaments.
In terms of new loot, a lot of interesting weapons have been added as well as a few old ones unvaulted. Handcannon and all pistols have been unvaulted. Pistols have always been the game's minimum base level weapon, but in the right hands can do devastating damage. The hand cannon can dish out insane 100+ damage on headshots which is sure to put any team in a vulnerable position after a hit. Burst assault rifle, lever action rifle and all smgs (submachine gun) have also made their way back into the game. The burst assault rifle is a choice for some people featuring three consecutive shots with a slight break in the middle to allow for the crosshair to readjust. In terms of smgs this will be nice as there is variety for people who do prefer the silenced option but overall won't contribute much. The lever action rifle is a step down from the infantry rifle; its fire rate is much slower and its damage is slightly reduced. The infantry would have been a better choice than the lever action seeing as it would have a way to be incorporated in many players loadouts whereas the lever action is outclassed in all aspects. Another reason why the lever action isn't a prime choice for most, the bolt action sniper is back, replaced by bows last season but it has made its return once again, one shot headshot will down an opposing team member instantly increasing your odds of winning an engagement and wasting the opposing teams resources even if you don't decide to act upon it. The lever action rifle does not fit in with either the slow shooting dmr class or the sniper rifles, therefore leaving it in somewhat of an odd midground, it is best to remove it as to stop the loot pool inflation. As of right now, the pump has not been removed which is odd as the lever action shotgun has also been added. My guess is that the pump will most likely be vaulted later on in the season with the return of the pressure shotgun but no one can really guess.
With the removal of some dear weapons an interesting leaf has been turned. A single mythic can now be located under corney complex. Once you have killed the boss (slone), a recon scanner and pulse rifle is dropped as a prize for conquering her layer. The recon scanner is an interesting twist on an old mechanic that we have seen in the flare gun. By shooting a tiny pellet nearby players are revealed which could be useful when scouting out an area, but more interesting is the pulse fire. As a dmr, it closely resembles weapons like the stark or infantry rifle, the slow rate of fire and 46 body shot damage reflect this too. It seems though the infantry has not fully been removed but has just been allocated to a single spot forcing players to land hot for this big pay-out or die trying.
The map hasn't changed much since last season besides a couple of twists to places already here. Corney Complex as already mentioned has a boss now, a new underground layer featuring Sloan, Sloan has a unique feature that allows her to split into two other identical duplicates to ward players' attention giving her and her henchmen more time to heal with you. In addition to this, several places have been taken over by alien space ships such as just above Believer Beach (the new Sweaty Sands). These spaceships are no joke, they will fight back. Currently they are in rotation through casual game modes and thankfully have not been added to arena, and certainly not FNCS. Quests now no longer need to be claimed at NPCs (non-player characters) themselves but can be accepted from telephone booths lying around the maps, which allows for more build-up of gold for players who are smart enough to invest their early game completing these to upgrade weapons to higher rarities before the ring closes in. Llamas have also been tweaked from their original concept dating all the way back to chapter one. Llamas now hop around the map leaving trails of their loot behind and you must deplete their hitpoints in order to speed up the process. With the addition to llamas, we can now see launch pads coming from them or floor loot, rotation has been lacking last season making most rotations by car which can be quite cumbersome if the terrain has lots of slopes. Launchpads offer a lot of early game rotation for teams who get the unlucky side of the zone or when we start getting into the 6th and 7th moving zones that get dangerous to traverse by foot as there is a high chance of colliding with other players. The construction of multiple radar dishes across the map allows for new landing locations which could help remedy the lack of loot in some parts of the map but for trio tournaments we will most likely still see teams having to distribute players to different landing locations to get their minimum gear.
Lastly, the format for the championship series is roughly the same as last year which includes three qualifiers and a semi-final. teams who don't make it through to the semi-final game will have a chance to participate in the reboot round which takes us to the last stage, finals. Prize money has been shifted slightly. Europe now has the largest prize pool sitting at 1.3M$ dollars with the NAE getting only 600k. Smaller regions like Oceana will only get 90k$ and the newly formed Middle East region will claim 120k$. No official statement has been released on how the money is distributed but it most likely depends on where the majority of the player base is located.
The Fortnite championship series takes the best players and drags them through Three stages of qualifying rounds for their chance at life-changing money. The winning team of the series will be awarded the top prize pool as well as the limited cosmetic “The Axe of Champions” which is one of the rarest cosmetics. Will you be the one to claim it?
