Falafel Recipe

By Ishan Sheth | March 3 2021 |

Falafels are delicate vegetarian fritters that have existed in the Middle Eastern for thousands of years. They are often served alongside hummus or tahini and provide a delicious base in shawarmas. They are a great comfort food but at the same time can be the star of a dish. From my experience they are the best from smaller restaurants throughout the middle east and can also be bought from street vendors. I recommend following this delicious and easy recipe that uses household ingredients.

Serves 4 people

Prep time: 15 minutes

Total time: 45 minutes

Ingredients for Falafel

Chickpeas | 2 cups

Red onion | 1 large

Garlic cloves | 3 cloves

Coriander Seeds (or Coriander Powder) | 1 tablespoon

Cumin Powder | 1 tablespoon

Turmeric | 1 tablespoon

Cilantro | 1 bunch or as much as your hearts content

Dill | 1 cup

Mint | 2 leaves

Baking Powder | tablespoon

Paprika | 1 tablespoon of paprika (optional)

Green Chilies | 2 small chilies (optional, if you can handle some heat)

Vegetable Oil for frying | 2 cups or 3 tablespoons for airfryer

Salt | 2 teaspoons

Directions

Start off with soaking your chickpeas overnight unless from a can then once drained can be used immediately. Add the chickpeas to a food processor (ensure that it is a food processor and not a blender) along with the garlic, dill, parsley, green chilies, mint, onion, turmeric, coriander seeds, paprika, cumin, baking powder. Blend until no small pieces from the vegetables are visible and you are left with a green paste (if you are having trouble blending everything add a tablespoon of water). Once everything is blended add it to a large bowl and keep in the fridge for about 15 minutes. Use two spoons or an ice-cream to scoop to form large round balls. Add your oil to a pot on high heat (to ensure that its hot enough take a little bit of falafel and add it to the oil, if it floats with bubbles surrounding it, it’s ready to use!). Take your falafel balls and add to the hot oil. The falafels should take about 30 – 45 seconds to cook on each side and you should be left with a beautiful dark brown crust and a creamy green center. Season with salt and garnish with parsley, of course enjoy!
