The Inheritance Games was one of the best books we’ve read this year and quickly became a favourite that we would recommend to everyone! This book is part of a duology (trilogy in 2022) and is a perfect mix of our favourite genres. It is a suspenseful mystery that has unexpected, shocking plot twists with an interlaced romantic subplot.
Set in a mansion located in the US, Avery, and her sister Libby, somehow end up with Tobias Hawthorne’s billion dollar fortune. Not knowing why this happened, she has to dig deeper into the secrets of the Hawthorne family and the four Hawthorne grandsons: Nash, Grayson, Jameson, and Xander. They discover a riddle that they have to solve that will reveal the reason why she was chosen to inherit their grandfather's fortune which reveals secrets and stirs up family drama. This book is very similar to the movie Knives Out because both have a similar mystery plot. However this book has a little more action and the characters are a lot more interesting and relatable because the reader has more information on the characters’ personalities and they are closer to the age of most readers reading this story.
“I loved the characters in the book, and the relationship that evolved throughout the book. This book was elegantly crafted in some sort of mystical and charming way.” -Andrea
The book is one of our favorites, and if you like suspenseful mysteries go read this book. The ending is a cliffhanger, but don't worry, the sequel to this book came out just this month!
Squid Games🔺⭐🔴☂️
Hwang Dong-hyuk
Squid Games, a psychological, thrilling K-Drama directed by the infamous Hwang Dong-hyuk aired last month attracting millions of viewers. Squid Games is a show about a contest, with 456 players, recruited from all over South Korea, who all have crushing debt. The recruits play a series of traditional children's games for a chance to win over 45.6 billion won. There is a death penalty for losing the games and only one person can survive to finally win the prize money.
The themes projected throughout the series include economic debt, capitalism and classism, specifically in South Korea, where the writer comes from. Hwang was inspired by the themes from his own perspective and observations in his life. Although Netflix originally declined his idea, he decided to pitch it once again two years ago, at a time when Netflix wanted to accept more ideas from global creators. This show became an immediate hit and broke the record for the most watched Netflix show of all time.
Foreshadowing major events and deaths was consistent throughout the series, and made the show much more interesting for the audience who got to find clues and make up theories as they watched.
Overall, the creativity, cinematography, and concept of this show was executed with excellence and left viewers wanting more. With these mind blowing plot twists, this should definitely be your next Netflix marathon. We recommend it especially if K-drama, suspense and psychological thrillers pique your interests!
