Championship Week and Winter Sports List

| By Satish Patel | November 23, 2021 |

This week, KSS fall sports reached a fever pitch! Our school sent four teams to the playoffs and two to the semifinals. At the junior level, both the girls basketball and boys volleyball teams made it to the quarter finals. Last Tuesday, the KSS gym hosted two semi-final games: the Senior Girls Basketball games, and the Senior Boys Volleyball game. And on Thursday, the Senior Boys Volleyball team played in the KASSAA championship! Here are the results from the semis and the boys’ final!

Senior Boys Volleyball Semi-Final

The Senior Boys Volleyball team took the floor for a matchup against perennial rivals Regi. This year, they came in as favourites to win, but Regi were up to the challenge. In a closely matched first set, Regi took a 23 to 19 lead, two points off of the set win. But the Bears rallied, and thanks to some great hits, they won the set 27-25.

After a dominant second set win by KSS, the boys once again faced some strong play from their opponent. Regi went up by 5 early in the third set, and the Bears took a timeout. They came out of it playing their best. Thanks to some great serving from left side Sam Rayner, KSS went on a six-point streak to take the lead. They followed with another five-point streak to win the set 25-17. They won the game three sets to nil and booked a spot in the KASSAA championship!

Senior Girls Basketball Semi-Final

The Senior Girls Basketball faced off against Holy Cross in the semi-final on Tuesday. The matchup resulted in the most exciting game of the season! Both teams were evenly matched all game, neither team leading by more than four until the fourth quarter. With six minutes left, KSS took the lead thanks to some great rebounding and a steal leading to an open layup. But Holy Cross clawed their way back to within two. Holy Cross tied the game with a free throw to send it to overtime. Overtime went mostly scoreless, until Holy Cross sank a rare three pointer to bring home the win.

The Bears played a great game, and their outstanding performance highlighted the work they have put in all season! The team coaches were especially proud of the girls’ growth and perseverance throughout the season.

Coach Lynn would also like to shout out the graduates who have been part of the program since Grade 9! These graduates include; Rylie Bradlynn for her leadership, unique jump-hook drives, and her deep voice cheers; Vayda Wells-McCaughen for her sick handles, euro-step, and energetic cheers and Grace Bonham-Carter for her 3-point shooting, on-ball defense, and competitive smile.

Senior Boys Volleyball Final

On Thursday, the Senior Boys defended their KASSAA title at home against Frontenac! After beating them twice during the regular season, the Bears were once again favorites. The boys came out strong in the first set with a dominant 25 to 12 win. But the second set proved to be much closer, with both teams trading the lead. With Frontenac leading 23 to 21, KSS needed to come back to avoid a tie game. The boys delivered, scoring four straight points to take the set.

But Frontenac wasn’t going away, and the third set was also closely fought. This time, it was KSS with the 23-21 lead, and it was Frontenac’s turn to go on a streak and to win the set. Faced with the prospect of a fifth set tiebreaker, the boys needed to regroup and regain confidence. They delivered a great performance under pressure and crushed Frontenac 25 to 11 to become the 2021 KASSAA champions!

Shoutout from Coach Compeau: to finals MVP Sam Rayner and to Tom Haklai for their outstanding leadership of the team over the course of the past few months!
