The Student's Association, most commonly known as SA, introduced new positions last year, the Junior and Senior Equity Commissioners. The Bears Bulletin interviewed Meredith Peters for an inside look at her position and to help our readers get to know their representatives!
Meredith Peters, a grade 10 student at KSS in the pre-IB program, is our Junior Equity Commissioner. She would like the student body to know she is very approachable, and she encourages anyone with concerns related to equity at KSS to voice them to her. Outside of school, she enjoys playing hockey and softball, and she is the goalie of the Ice Wolves hockey team. She also likes to read a variety of genres of books.
Meredith ran for the position of Junior Equity Commissioner because she is “really interested in being an advocate for KSS students.” Coming to KSS, she felt “welcomed by a school that is diverse and positive and has a lot of representation.” She feels that her participation in different clubs like Harmony Team and past experience with student leadership opportunities have prepared her for this position. Meredith admits that thus far, “it’s definitely been a lot of figuring out what the position will entail.” Equity commissioners consider different perspectives in the student body in relation to SA events, and plan equity-related initiatives.
Currently, Meredith has contributed to the organization of spirit weeks, focaccia bread sales, and a food drive for the Partners in Mission food bank and KSS food pantry. She is looking forward to “more events that represent the student body more.” Another of her goals is to build “more of a stronger foundation for [the equity commissioner position] and ensure that it [continues on] in the future.”
