Meet Next Year's Grade Representatives

By Nate Loken | May 25 2021 |

It’s been a little while since voting occurred for next year’s Student Association grade representatives but there’s never a bad time to learn more about the people representing us. The elected representatives are as follows: Rahaf Mansur and Andrea Wang as grade 10 reps, Samuel Zhang as grade 11 rep and Emma Detomasi as grade 12 rep. A huge congratulations goes out to these individuals who managed to get elected and also to anyone who ran but didn’t make it; the competition is what pushed every student in the running to do the best they possibly could for our school.

We were again able to interview all the representatives in order for all of you to get to know them better as well as to provide some entertaining political theorizing based on their favourite types of pizza.

Why did you run for your position?

Emma said she received a lot of inspiration and encouragement from Mr Bradlynn. She is especially interested in applying because she believes that being a part of SA will allow her to make change within the school community.

Samuel stated that he ran because he wanted to give back to the community, in part because of the “welcoming and inspiring community with whom [he has been] acquainted and developed.” Samuel declared his belief in the strength of our community, “even as we enter into the year that has been consistently labelled as the next step up, the challenging year, we won't falter, even with the hardship of the pandemic continually raging around us.”

Andrea informed us that one of her core motivations for running was to increase student-on-student interactions through events. She also told us she “wanted to share more opportunities where students could share their voices and where I can incorporate them in events.”

Rahaf told us that she believes SA events and spirit days are an important part of our high school experience and she aspires to make every student feel represented in these events. She also stated that she wanted to do her best to make next year the best it can possibly be, in spite of the pandemic.

What do you hope to achieve in your position?

Emma informed us that she hopes to “create a welcoming environment for all KSS students,” though she does want to focus on the grade 12’s and ensure that she creates a memorable year for the grads.

Samuel said that his most significant commitment is “to continue to honour [his] promise and vision of making KSS not a footnote in the history of [our] lives, but an integral part that will be remembered.” He hopes to do this by ensuring the desires of the student body he represents are respected in SA meetings.

Andrea let us know that she hopes to achieve student equity and make sure every student's voice matters. She also hopes that students can “feel [engaged] with the process of events.”

Rahaf told us she hopes to “create an amazing 10th grade year for everyone by being very inclusive and valuing students’ voices, needs, and interests,” as well as to create a “memorable and fun year.”

What is something you want KSS students to know about you?

Emma wants students to know that she is interested in hearing what they have to say. She hopes that they’ll reach out if they need anything.

Samuel wants KSS students to know that he is “extremely laid back and always willing to talk and chill with people” He also loves hearing new ideas and is open to constructive criticism. He says that he will never make anyone wear a “mental mask.” If anyone has anything they want to say to him, he invites them to talk to him if they see him and they are also welcome to email him at Zhangs@limestone.on.ca.

Andrea told us that she wants students to know and may be surprised to know that she loves piano and playing volleyball. She also told us that she is a passionate anti-procrastinator and her friends are often annoyed by her encouragement regarding getting work done early.

Rahaf informed us that she wants students to know that she will try her absolute best to represent them and help them throughout their second year of high school. She also stated she is an “approachable person, and [is] more than happy to help them with any concerns.”

What is your favourite type of pizza?

Samuel and Andrea both expressed appreciation for Hawaiian pizza, which some undercover journalists believe could be a subtle sign of foreign entanglement in their campaigns. However, some of our chief analysts have determined that this is a way for these two politicians to establish an unofficial alliance in order to combat the Satish and Sadie meat-lovers alliance. Some are calling it the Pineapple Pact.

Emma informed us that her favourite type of pizza is barbeque chicken pizza, specifically from Score Pizza, which some theorists believed to be a result of Score funding her campaign but was later dismissed given that everyone likes Score pizza.

Rahaf informed us that she enjoys cheese pizza or jalapeno peppers with black olives, which to be honest, our chief analytical team didn’t know what to make of because it’s late at night and they want to go to bed.
